EDF offers internships and fellowships for students and recent graduates in a variety of programs and departments throughout the organization. The ultimate goal of our internship and fellowship program is to provide high-quality experiences (including relevant projects and opportunities for networking) that form the foundation for any individual who is serious about pursuing an environmental career.
Overall Function
EDF’s Office of the Chief Economist is seeking a qualified and motivated student for its summer internship. The Economic Policy Intern will assist economists in EDF’s Office of the Chief Economist in developing and analyzing market-based solutions to a wide range of environmental problems through research, data analysis, and assistance with writing internal reports and public communications. This position would mainly assist with a study estimating the environmental and distributional impacts of, and costs associated with, city bus fleet electrification in Houston, TX.
Key Responsibilities
Tasks will include but are not limited to:
- Help create and maintain information databases based on a wide variety of economic models and sources
- Provide timely in-house economic analyses for the Office of the Chief Economist
- Monitor and assist in responding to economic queries from press/media, government, and internal sources
- Assist in writing reports and press releases on economic issues
- Provide support for the above tasks through internet and library research
- Conduct geospatial analyses in support of a research project
Qualifications
- Graduate student with economics major or related discipline preferred.
- Interest in public policy and advocacy, climate change policy and use of market-based solutions to environmental problems.
- Working knowledge of GIS (ArcMap, QGIS, etc)
- Highly proficient in Excel.
- Strong data management skills.
- Ability to code in R or other data management/econometrics software
- Exceptional organizational skills—must be detail-oriented and able to multi-task
- Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment with changing needs and critical deadlines
- Excellent research skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently

Austin, TX
Term
10 weeks during Summer 2019.
Hours
Full-time, 35 hours per week.
Compensation
This internship would involve either compensation for hourly work paid at a rate competitive with leading non-profits or academic credit. Students are encouraged to seek academic credit through their college/university and EDF will ensure that any and all paperwork needed to secure academic credit is completed.
