Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) is a vital interface between global policies in the economic, social and environmental spheres and national action. UN DESA collaborates closely with its partners at regional and country levels in helping countries to formulate and implement national sustainable development strategies. UN-DESA’s work addresses a range of cross-cutting issues that affect peoples’ lives and livelihoods and is founded on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) supported by the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development. The Financing for Sustainable Development Office, UN DESA provides coherent and integrated support to Member States in addressing the issues related to financing for development, as well as the means of implementation for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Communications internship is for 3-4 months, with possibility of extension up to 6 months. The Office does three recruitments per year. The first recruitment is for the period of January through April; the second is from May to August; and the third one is from September to December. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
The intern will work with the Financing for Sustainable Development Office, under the supervision of the chief of the Strategic Engagement and Policy Integration Branch. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background as well as the internship period.
The intern will work on developing communication strategies for the office, for example preparing printable materials, designing the corporate presentation, developing the social media of the office, among other tasks. The responsibilities of the internship position will include:
•Support the development and implementation of a communication strategy for various products, working with professional staff
•Spread awareness regarding the Financing for Sustainable Development Office’s products and platforms among key stakeholder groups, including Member States, civil society, the private sector, philanthropies and academia/think tanks.
•Strengthen the relationship of the office with the mass media.
•Conduct a plan to show the work of the office in social networks.
•Elaborate products that communicate the financing for development agenda, as reflected in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and related agreements.
•Develop concept notes about the events, workshops, seminars managed by the office.
•Provide support to strengthening the online presence of the Financing for Sustainable Development Office, including through content creation and management of the Office website, where appropriate
•Draft articles about the work of the office which could be published or posted.
•Performs other duties as assigned.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications. Demonstrated experience with online and social media campaigns and/or graphic design tools is preferred;
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in writing and communication skills in English are required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.
