Organisational context
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting
rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to
escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR teams are in the field in 130 countries, using their
expertise to protect and care for millions of people.
UNHCR’s Private Sector Partnership Service (PSP) supports UNHCR’s fast-growing global
collaboration with the private sector through its network in the Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific,
the Middle East and Gulf region, and Africa. Within PSP, the Private Partnerships and
Philanthropy Section (PPH) engages corporations, private foundations and individual
philanthropists. The Shared Value Partnerships Unit is a newly created team within PPH,
based in Geneva, with the purpose of developing and supporting new and non-traditional forms
of collaboration with the private sector beyond fundraising alone. We aim to work with business
in particular to advocate for and advance refugees’ rights, to promote refugees’ economic and
financial inclusion, to increase refugees’ access to and uptake of products and services that
they require, to stimulate private sector investment in refugee-hosting areas, to achieve cost
efficiencies, and to foster innovation.
The position
We are looking for a proactive individual with an interest in cross-sectoral partnerships, as well
as refugee and migration issues, to assist the team in its start-up phase. The internship offers
a unique opportunity to help build strategic partnerships with the private sector at a time where
UNHCR is leading a paradigm shift in how the world responds to large-scale refugee situations.
The Global Compact on Refugees foresees a new role for the private sector as part of a whole-
of-society approach to finding lasting solutions for the refugees. The intern will be frequently
exposed to the Copenhagen-based global teams that are driving forward UNHCR’s
engagement with the private sector in all parts of the world. Therefore, we seek a dynamic,
goal-oriented and outgoing individual with a strong interest in the role of the private sector in
the humanitarian sphere.
Duties and responsibilities
Support mapping and data collection about shared value partnerships and prospects
Create standard templates;
Compile information on selected partners and prospects based on available documentation;
Carry out media monitoring on selected partners and prospects;
Draft and update fact sheets and other materials about selected partners and prospects;
Assist with preparing concept notes, proposals, pitch decks, briefing notes, talking points;
Help maintain accurate records of partnership activities, using the existing internal filing system.
Help plan and organize meetings, webinars, workshops and other events including:
Support efforts to engage the private sector at key events including the Nansen Refugee Award ceremony (October 2019) and the Global Refugee Forum (17-18 December).
Help organize internal and external meetings, teleconferences, events, including
minute-taking.
Contribute to the stewardship of the IKEA Foundation partnership:
Compile information on progress, challenges, lessons learned and outcomes of the IKEA Foundation partnership;
Write an internal case study about the project in Dollo Ado;
Support the organization of field missions, including donor missions, where the IKEA Foundation-funded projects are implemented, to support monitoring and reporting as part of donor stewardship activities; Support the organization of the IWitness trips to Rwanda and Jordan, including drafting and preparation of the IWitness trips materials and packages.
Support other team activities as required:
Coordinate monthly internal reporting for the team Contribute to partnership initiatives, planning and reporting, partnership
strategy development, internal communication, recruitment and creation and use of
shared tools and processes, updating IKEA F partnership presentations
Essential minimum qualifications and professional experience required
The ideal candidate will be required to have the following:
• Be a recent graduate (completed your studies within one year from your application) or current student in graduate/undergraduate school program for a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO, in a field relevant or of interest of the work of the Organization;
• Strong research and analytical skills;
• Fluency in English and strong drafting and editing skills;
• Planning and organizing competencies with ability to multitask and prioritize workload;
• Genuine desire to learn and adapt;
• Knowledge about international humanitarian and development work (desirable);
• Understanding of the role of partnerships with the private sector (desirable);
• Experience with working in an international environment (desirable).
Location
The successful candidate will be based with the team at UNHCR HQ in Geneva, Switzerland.
Conditions
The internship is expected to begin in April 2019 and last for a period of six months. The role is full time (40 hours per week). Working hours are 9.00 am to 5.30 pm, Monday to Friday.
